Such A Lonely Word

.

A friend asked me this question last night :

Do you think Malaysians are honest?

Well, I think most are but sadly, many are not. Let’s put it this way, we have heard so many times how quickly handphones and wallets that are left just for a few minutes disappear. No effort at all was made to track the owners. But on the other hand, only this morning a colleague told of this one time when he was in a bank a man came in and handed to the security guard an envelope with a wad of money inside that someone left on the ATM machine outside. Then there was another instant when a buddy of his dropped his money clip, a man tapped him on the shoulder to tell him that he has dropped his money. These happened right in front of him so I guess it’s not hearsay. I hate hearsay stories, stories that someone’s cousin’s mother-in-law’s brother’s pet sister’s pet heard.

Back to the Billy Joel matter, I hope I could be as honest as those two guys mentioned above. I’d like to think I’d be. I think I’d be. I think I’d return any handphone I’d find, regardless if it is one of those super duper phones that we have nowadays, very much unlike mine with which I could only make and receive calls and send and receive messages. Wallets too. There might be money in it but it’s not mine. Same with credit cards. Maybe the owner would be impressed by my honesty and he happens to be a millionaire looking for someone to inherit his fortune and I fit the bill perfectly. Angan-angan free kan? But until the day comes, put me down as questionable.

I drill that into Sofia and Nazzim, that we must be honest and not take what is not ours. I don’t know, but I think Malaysians are becoming more and more selfish each day. The way we drive, the way we treat each other and the way we conduct our business.

A queue? Jump it.

The door? Hold it for you? You’re lucky I didn’t slam it into your face.

Say thank you for holding the door for me? Why should I do that?

Come what may, make money whichever way.

Make hay while the sun shines.

Everyone is doing it. If I don’t do it to you, someone else will.

Well, I got to find me a forgotten phone or a dropped wallet to prove a point!!! Wish me luck!!!

P.S. Reminds me of another question that another friend asked. A bombshell of a question!!!
